Opening a Japan Post Bank Account

By One Coin English Team | June 4, 2025

We already went through the basics of how to open a bank account in Japan. However, different banks have different procedures and requirements. Today, we bring you one of the easiest ways to open a Japanese bank account!

JP Post Bank now offers the option to open a bank account using their app. The Yucho Tetsuzuki App is available in different languages, and there is no need to visit a physical location.

How to open a Japanese bank account using the Yucho Tetsuzuki App

First and foremost, you'll have to download the app. It is available in the Japanese App Store and Google Play under the name ゆうちょ手続きアプリ (Yuucho Tetsuzuki Apuri).

Below are screenshots of the initial procedures.

Requirements:

  • Residence Card
  • Residency in Japan
  • Over 16 years old
  • If you're a Student or Technical Intern Trainee: Student ID/Employee ID/Certificate of Enrollment

Important! This method takes longer than visiting a JP Post location. All the documents sent through the app need to be verified, and it takes 1 week for the bank to do so.

So, if there are any errors with the application, a correction will need to be made, and another week will be required for verification.

Here are common reasons a verification fails, according to JP Post Bank:

  • We cannot open an account based on your declared purpose of the transactions.
    • Be specific as to why you need an account!
  • The expiration date on your personal identification document has passed.
    • If the Residence Card's expiration date is within 3 months of the application date, your application will be denied.
  • The image on the Residence Card was incomplete.
    • Be careful not to cover any part of your Residence Card when taking the picture or to send one with too much reflection, making it difficult to read the information on it.
  • Incorrect/different name, birth date, nationality, period of stay, and visa type.
    • Enter exactly the same information on your Residence Card in your application, including spaces and the name in Katakana.
Check this link for more details on the reasons a verification can fail.

A few more things to consider:

The account type that you can apply for with this application is "Yucho Direct + (Plus)", a bankbook-free account. After opening your account, the cash card will be sent by simple registered mail.

If you are planning to move soon, please carry out the transactions after moving.
